Use URL patterns in tours

Make a tour work on pages whose web address changes from visitor to visitor, such as pages that include an account or project number.

Who can do this: All Flook users

When you need this

Lots of web apps put something unique in the address. For example:

  • yourapp.com/companies/4821/projects/77
  • yourapp.com/companies/1093/projects/12

If your tour's Page URL is companies/4821/projects/77, the tour only works for that one company and project. A pattern lets it work for everyone.

The patterns you can use

Pattern What it means
* Any value, in this part of the address
(a\|b\|c) Only one of these values
{valueName} Any value, and remember it so later pages can use it
{valueName:(a\|b\|c)} One of these values, and remember it

Each part of the address between / characters is matched separately. A pattern must have the same number of parts as the page address. For example, projects/* matches projects/77 but not projects/77/settings.

Steps

  1. Open the tour's first page group in Page Group Settings.
  2. In Page URL, replace each part that changes with a pattern. For example, change companies/4821/projects/77 to companies/{companyID}/projects/*.
  3. Check the badge says Matches current page.
  4. Click Save Group.
  5. Open each later page group and use the same names, for example companies/{companyID}/settings. The panel lists the values you can reuse under Available wildcards and tokens form tour start:.
  6. Click Save Group, then Save Tour.

How Flook uses the values

When a visitor starts the tour, Flook remembers the values from the page they're on. When the tour moves to the next page, Flook fills those values into the next page's address. That way each visitor is taken to their own account or project, not someone else's.

Tips

  • * values are used in order: the first * on a later page uses the first * value from the start page. Named values like {companyID} are easier to follow, because the order doesn't matter.
  • You can only reuse values that are in the first page group.
  • If a page's address has query details after a ?, you only need to include the ones that must be there.
