Use a… When you want to… Example
Tour Guide someone through a task, one step at a time, even across several pages. "Set up your first project"
Tooltip Explain one thing on the page when someone hovers over or clicks it. A "?" icon next to a confusing setting
Highlight Make sure people notice one thing on the page. Pointing out a new button
Popup Share a message that isn't tied to anything on the page. An announcement or welcome message

Tours

A tour is a set of steps shown in order. Each step is either a tooltip (attached to something on the page) or a popup (shown on its own). Visitors move through it with Previous and Next. A tour can start by itself when someone visits a page, or from a button in another piece of content.

See Create your first tour.

Tooltips

A tooltip is attached to something on your page, such as a button, link or field. It appears when a visitor hovers over or clicks it. You can also add a small icon, called a launcher, next to the element. The tooltip then appears when the visitor hovers over or clicks the icon instead.

See Create a tooltip.

Highlights

A highlight points at something on your page and, by default, dims the rest of the page around it. It appears by itself a few seconds after the page loads, and you choose how often it shows.

See Create a highlight.

Popups

A popup appears in the centre of the screen, or pinned to an edge or corner. It appears by itself after the page loads, and it isn't attached to anything on the page.
