Create a tooltip¶
Add a tooltip to something on your website so visitors can get help right where they need it.
Who can do this: All Flook users
Before you start¶
- Install the Flook Chrome extension.
- Your company needs a main website. See Manage your websites.
Steps¶
You can start in the Flook Builder or in the dashboard.
Start in the Flook Builder¶
- Go to the page on your website where you want the tooltip.
- Open the Flook Builder.
- Click Add New Tour or Widget (+), then New Tooltip.
- When you see Click on the element you want to highlight, click the thing on the page you want the tooltip to point to. Press Esc to cancel.
- Edit the text in the tooltip. See Edit the content of an item.
- In Tooltip Settings, change the Name so you can find it later.
- Choose how the tooltip appears. See Choose what makes a tooltip appear.
- Click Save.
Start in the dashboard¶
- Click Tooltips in the left-hand menu.
- Click New Tooltip.
- Enter a Name of Tooltip.
- Under Creation URL, choose your website. Then enter the rest of the address of the page where you want the tooltip, for example
settings/profile. - Click Continue. Your website opens on that page with the Flook Builder ready to go.
- Follow steps 4 to 8 above.
What happens next¶
After you save, you're asked Do you also want to publish this widget? You have three choices:
- Publish makes it live straight away.
- Keep editing lets you carry on.
- Done takes you back to the list.
New tooltips are saved as a draft, so visitors won't see one until you publish it. See Publish and unpublish.
Tips¶
- New tooltips show on This page only by default. To show the tooltip on more pages, see Choose which pages an item shows on.
- A new tooltip reuses some settings from the last tooltip you made, such as its theme, position and launcher. That keeps your tooltips looking consistent.
- To change the element the tooltip points to, click Change Selection (the target icon) at the top of the page.
Troubleshooting¶
"Please enter a valid URL" or "Please enter a valid domain, e.g. app.acme.com or localhost:3000"¶
Check the website and page you've entered in the New Tooltip window. Enter the website without wildcards, like www.yourdomain.com.
"Create and edit directly on your site" appears instead¶
The Flook Builder isn't installed in this browser, or your company doesn't have a main website yet. Click Install Flook Chrome extension, or ask an admin to set up your website in Settings → Websites.
The Save button is greyed out¶
Save only works once you've made a change and the Name isn't empty.
